Participant FAQ

Participant Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why are you contacting me?

A: I am looking for channels with a) vibrant and interactive communities that are b) growing or evolving in some way. To get an idea of how diversity is interacting with the conventional “gamer” identity, I’m also looking for a cross-section of streamers – this means as many different backgrounds and walks of life as possible. In 3 years of observation, your channel was shortlisted as a potential match for these criteria.

Q: How much time is this going to take?

A: I recommend spending no more than one hour for the written replies. Interviews typically take around 30 minutes total but can last up to an hour. I am based in Tokyo, and all of this is taking place online and over email, so timing can be flexible.

Q: Is this a real study?

A: I sure hope so - I’ve dedicated the past three years of my life to it! But being more sincere, yes, it is real and I hope it can contribute to people’s understanding of Twitch and platforms like it. Your voice and your experience are valuable in this endeavor.

Q: Exactly what kind of study is this?

source: https://www.insidehook.com/article/internet/gen-z-question-marks

A: It is an exploratory ethnography in the pilot phase. The focus is on the words of participants via interview, with some analysis from the researcher. The main goal is to represent the practices and experiences of the participants as accurately as possible.

Q: Is this going to be recorded or distributed in any way?

A: My method is to video record the interview over Discord using screen capture technology. I run this recording through a speech-to-text program to help me transcribe the interview. After that, I delete the recording. If you’d like, I can send you a copy of the recording as well.

Some participants prefer to be audio-recorded only. Some participants prefer no recording, and in that case, I just take notes. Any one of these methods is acceptable. If you are comfortable with recording, I will always make clear when the recording starts and stops.

Q: How do you protect people’s privacy?

A: All names and identifying features are anonymized in the written report. No video or audio recording of participants is distributed in any way.

Q: Will I get paid for doing this study?

A: Unfortunately, no. However, some participants have said the experience had a positive impact on their work. I hope the study sheds light on the incredible work streamers do, and maybe shares the lessons they can teach others about an increasingly online world.

Q: Can I mention this to my community?

A: Of course! I don’t want this study to disrupt your work, but if you’d like to share it with your community, please feel free to do so.

Q: If I change my mind later, can I opt out?

A: Yes, you may opt out at any time – even after signing the consent form and doing the interview. In the process of research, I have become a fan of your channel and I do not want to negatively impact your experience or your work in any way.

Q: How do I contact you if I have more questions?

A: You can email me at kpg5@leicester.ac.uk.
